The PUBLIC Theatre, 616 Center St.

Friday March 12th at 10pm: The Harold
Long-form improv returns to The PUBLIC Theatre, but you won't be waiting long for the laughs. Watch as we take a few simple suggestions from the audience and weave them into a rich tapestry of hilarity. Kind of like that movie Wanted, but way more believable. There's no way to know where this night will take you comedically, so jump aboard and hang on.

Sautrday March 13th 10pm: ILR's Comedy Throwdown
The Throwdown saw its Season V debut wiped out by ice and snow, so let's try this again, shall we? Ahem... ImprovLittleRock's most tried and true format returns for 2010 with two-teams, one hard-to-please judge, and an audience inspiring us with ideas while they witness the battle for comic supremacy. Who will win? (Hint: It's you! The competition is just an allegory and vessel for your amusement!)

"Viewfinding: Photography by Brian Cormack" Exhibit
Historic Arkansas Museum

Brian Cormack is a native and resident of North Little Rock whose photography includes Arkansas waterfalls and landscapes, as well as cityscapes captured at night. His work is evidence of the practice of watching and listening to the present moment with disciplined attention. The images he produces relay both the glory of the inanimate, and, conversely, the quiet stillness of the often lively characteristics of nature. Cormack has been an active photographer for about 15 years, exhibiting in several local arenas. His work has been used as the feature art for the Little Rock Film Festival, as well as by the National Park Service. “Some [of the exhibited photos] were taken along grueling hiking trips through some of the most difficult terrain in the state,” says Cormack in his artist statement, and others, “from just a few blocks from where you’re standing now.” All of the 23 photographs were taken in Arkansas and relay his love of the state and its natural and manmade beauty.

Jon Haydn’s sculpture celebrates Earth and combines materials such as stones and fallen Ozark wood. As a painter and printmaker, Mary Shelton’s art imparts a subtle spiritual element, presented in a primary palette.

Historic Arkansas Museum is open 9am-5pm, Monday through Saturday and 1-5pm on Sunday.

Admission to the galleries and parking are free; tours of historic grounds are $2.50 for adults, $1.00 for children under 18, $1.50 for senior citizens.

"World of the Pharaohs" Exhibit
Arkansas Arts Center

The Arkansas Arts Center is proud to announce it will present the epic exhibition 'World of the Pharaohs" Egyptian Masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
“World of the Pharaohs will be the first exhibition of Egyptian art to come to Arkansas,” said Arkansas Arts Center Executive Director Nan Plummer.  “The Arkansas Arts Center is committed to bringing the best art to our state. The art of this amazing ancient culture is utterly fascinating—and important—to human beings all over the world. To see 3,000 years of advanced civilization right here in Little Rock,—it’s a thrill that Arkansans deserve,” she said.

Spanning more than 3,000 years of dynastic history, "World of the Pharaohs" consists of more than 200 objects.  The exhibition dramatically illustrates the rich and diverse aspects of one of the world's great civilizations and is particularly strong in excavated material from the Pyramid age (2675-2130 B.C.), widely regarded as Egypt's finest hour. Artifacts include a royal decree carved in limestone (Decree of Neferirkare), the false of Inty, a Priestess of Inty and a relief scene from the tomb of Qar and Idu.  Funerary objects are also well-represented.  Among them are a Ptolemaic sarcophagus lid, a selection of stelae and several shawabits of officials.  Other objects include a wooden granary model, stone vessels, ceramics, jewelry, amulets and a cat mummy.  “The Arkansas Arts Center is the only museum in Arkansas that can host an exhibition of this size and magnitude.  We are excited to host this exhibition, and think our donors and sponsors will be proud to be part of this major event that will put Arkansas on the map of the art world in a whole new way.”

For more information, call 501-372-4000 or visit www.arkarts.com.

Gallery Hours:  10am-5pm, Tuesday through Saturday and 11am-5pm, Sunday.         Closed Monday & major holidays.

Learn New Tips for Catching Big Slabs
6:30 PM - 8 PM
Witt Stephens Jr. Central Arkansas Nature Center

Cajuns call them sac-a-lait, which means “bag of milk.” Among other colorful nicknames are slab, speck, papermouth, calico bass and white perch. Anglers have as many places to seek these popular sportfish in Arkansas as unusual names for them. Crappie are also delicious to eat, which is another reason anglers prize them.

Whether you are a seasoned fisherman or a novice, Keith Sutton can give you tips on ways to improve your catch. His expertise is illustrated in several books, including The Crappie Book and Fishing Arkansas. These and other titles will be available for purchase at the seminar.

Seating is limited, call the nature center office at 501-907-0636 to register to attend.

There is no fee for this program thanks to your support of the 1/8 Cent Conservation Sales Tax.

"Summertree"
The Weekend Theater, 7th and Chester

Summertree by Ron Cowen.

Winner of Off-Broadway’s Vernon Rice Award and concerned with the problems and fears of young people in today’s uncertain world, this honest crucial play is both a joyous expression of the good things in life and a powerful indictment of war and the senseless waste which it can bring. Travel with our Young Man as he remembers his youth, his love, his terror, and the idiosyncrasies of living. This is a story that will question where we came from, where we’re going and most important where we are now and what do we truly value. There’s a beauty and elegance to the writing that elevates the play to the level of poetry. Cowen has distilled this bittersweet part of the human experience to its essence. Directed by Ralph Hyman.

"Glengarry Glen Ross"
The Weekend Theater, 7th and Chester

Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet.

More pertinent than ever in today’s gravely compromised political atmosphere, this Pulitzer Prize winning tale of cutthroat competition among desperate real estate salesmen needles into businessmen and, by extrapolation, into American corporate practices. With obscenities as common as conjunctions, these hardened hucksters hustle worthless Florida land developments on the easily deluded. Insults rage. Tempers flare. Reveling in obscenity and scatology, the alpha-male animals of “Glengarry”, metaphor for the greedy in The American Corporation, practice the art of the deal, the hard sell, the scam, mesmerizing the honest and honorable public as easily as a viper does its prey. Directed by John Haman.
