"Navigating Vernacular(s)" - Exhibit
Historic Arkansas Museum

Featuring the mixed media work of Lauren McEntire, a contemporary visual artists working with traditional craft mediums, such as embroidery, quilting, sewing, knitting and crochet. McEntire creates visual narratives by borrowing images from both popular culture and underground punk youth subcultures, and reproducing them into her own line drawings. Through her work, McEntire communicates her personal history and emotional past. “I am generally interested in feminist issues such as sexuality, identity, objectification, emotions, and self-reflection,” McEntire states. “Speaking simultaneously to women's broad history and my own life experiences, my recent work has been based on the power of interpersonal relationship to affect transformation, identity, sentimentality, sensitivity and longing.”

Historic Arkansas Museum is open 9am-5pm. Monday through Saturday, 1-5pm on Sunday. Admission to the galleries and parking are free; tours of historic grounds are $2.50 for adults, $1.00 for children under 18, $1.50 for senior citizens. November 13, 2009 - January 9, 2010
"Lee and Grant" - Exhibit
MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History

On April 9, 1865 after four years of conflict, approximately 630,000 deaths and over one million casualties, General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, signaling the end of the Civil War. The terms agreed to by the two became the model for other surrenders that soon followed. By the end of the Civil War, most Americans considered Lee and Grant to be heroes. This exhibit looks at the lasting impact that Lee and Grant have had on our society, not only through the war years but directly after the war during the Reconstruction Era, into the 20th and 21st centuries. The exhibit funded and provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Virginia Historical Society will feature artifacts, interactive displays, and engaging text.

"Thresholds: Landscape, Memory and Architecture" Exhibit
Historic Arkansas Museum

Presented in conjunction with the Arkansas Arts Council (AAC). This exhibit pairing two contemporary Arkansas artists, Jeri Hillis and Deborah Warren, both living in Hot Springs, was created with resources identified in the Arkansas Artist Registry, a program of AAC.

Jeri Hillis’s oil paintings and mixed media collages express her fascination with time and memory. Skillfully executed large oil paintings depict architectural elements weathered by time. Her work questions the thresholds between what is real and what is imagined. Jeri Hillis, resident of Hot Springs, Arkansas, since 2005, is a noted Caribbean artist. She lived and worked on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands from 1989-2003. Known for her large oil paintings and mixed media collages inspired by the old Danish Colonial architecture of the islands with stone archways, shuttered windows and weathered passageways, she has exhibited in museums and galleries in France, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands Antilles, Haiti, Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, St. Croix, New England, and Arkansas. Her work is held in numerous private collections.  In 2008, she was selected for the “Small Works on Paper Exhibition” for which she received a purchase award for the permanent collection of the Arkansas Arts Council.

Deborah Warren’s toned gelatin silver prints and archival pigment prints focus on, she says, “the changing landscape in its most elemental forms, the myths and folklore associated with a sense of place, and the architecture designed to frame the landscape.” Deborah Warren began her career in Memphis, Tennessee, making documentary films about community issues and cultural traditions of Tennessee and the Mississippi Delta. Since 1989, she has worked as a fine art photographer in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Her portfolios include landscapes and historic architecture of America, Italy, and Cuba.  She was selected as the 2007 Woman to Watch (Photography) by the Arkansas Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, a program designed “to increase the visibility of, and critical response to, promising women artists who are deserving of national and international attention.”  Her work has won numerous awards.

Historic Arkansas Museum is open 9am-5pm. Monday through Saturday, 1-5pm on Sunday. Admission to the galleries and parking are free; tours of historic grounds are $2.50 for adults, $1.00 for children under 18, $1.50 for senior citizens. The Historic Arkansas Museum Store is open 10am-4:30pm. Monday through Saturday, 1-4pm on Sunday.

"Custom by Design: Contemporary Furniture Handmade in Arkansas" Exhibit
Historic Arkansas Museum, Gallery II

Custom by Design highlights the artistry in handmade, one-of-a-kind studio furniture created in Arkansas. The exhibit includes works by: Tommy Farrell, Mia Hall, Keith Newton, Whitney Patterson, 2009 Arkansas Living Treasure Doug Stowe and Lucas Strack. The furniture pieces on display are rooted in the traditional processes of craft and material with aspects of sculpture, innovation, experimentation and cross-pollination from other disciplines. The common thread in the exhibited works is the notion of function. Each artist has, however, pushed the notion of the traditional every-day furniture by infusing the objects with unique aesthetics, non-traditional materials or concept and narrative.

Historic Arkansas Museum is open 9am-5pm, Monday through Saturday and 1-5pm on Sunday. Admission to the galleries and parking are free; tours of historic grounds are $2.50 for adults, $1.00 for children under 18, $1.50 for senior citizens.

For more information, call 501-324-9351 or visit www.HistoricArkansas.org.
