Your Guide to A Little Rock In Little Rock
Arkansas’ capital city is steeped in history, including how it got its name. Get started on a journey today that dates back to the 18th century.
In 1722, French explorer Jean-Baptiste Bénard de La Harpe and his expedition traveled up the Arkansas River from the Gulf of Mexico. After 700 miles of navigating through sand and silt banks, on April 9 the explorer described in his journal some “rocks sticking out of the ground,” likely referring to a striking bluff of mountainous rock situated up the bend and north of the river. It was coined “Le Grand Rocher” meaning The Big Rock.
He also encountered a notable small rock outcropping on the river's southern side that provided a harbor suitable for docking. La Harpe named that formation La Petite Roche - “The Little Rock” - our city’s namesake. It would serve as a popular spot for trade and commerce.

Today, the landmark overlooks the Arkansas River at La Petite Roche Landing in Riverfront Park’s Sturgis Plaza. A pathway leads to the base of the Junction Bridge where six panels explain the importance of the site.
Riverfront Park is arguably one of the best public parks in the country. Nestled within 33 acres, this 11-block-long park serves as Little Rock's front lawn, providing ample room for strolling or cycling along the riverbank and admiring the park's 100+ works of public art. Concerts are regularly held at the park's amphitheater while children’s play areas and splash pads dot the landscape.

Beyond the historical landmark, Little Rock offers a vibrant mix of attractions and activities. The William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum is a must-visit, offering insights into the 42nd president’s time in office and featuring a full-scale replica of the Oval Office.
